Fall And Winter Weather Increases Likelihood of Wildlife in Florida Homes

Updated: Jul 21, 2022

As we enter Florida’s fall and winter months there is more to do than cleaning your home’s gutters after our rainy months have put them to the test. It’s also an opportune time for wildlife to find shelter in your home. To thwart this, it’s important to be vigilant and check for signs that a critter may be able to enter while you’re performing other seasonal chores around the house.

Here are some things you’ll want to keep in mind.

Survey Your Home’s Exterior

Keeping your home’s exterior in good condition is the best way to keep unwelcome visitors out. Any rotted or missing wood for example, leaves an open entry way for animals and many only need a very tiny hole to get in (anything over the size of a quarter). Even if it doesn’t look very big, they may find a way of trespassing. Fix any holes or other wear and tear before the colder months come around as animals are looking for a warm place to take shelter.

Don’t Forget the Roof

One of the most common places to find wildlife is in your home’s attic. These creatures most likely entered through the roof or an area close to the location so if it’s been a while since you’ve had anyone look at your roof, it might be time to get up and there and double check there aren’t any access openings inviting wildlife in.

Look Low for Damage

It’s common to check up above when you think about the places raccoons, squirrels or bats are typically entering the home, but don’t forget while you’re checking to also survey what’s happening beneath your home. Opossums and Rats can enter through holes under decks as well as the roof so putting up mesh wiring around any perimeter gaps can help.
