Do You Have Spooky Noises In Your Attic? Hearing Things Go Bump At Night?

Updated: Jul 21, 2022

Just in time for Halloween, there’s something in your attic making noises. Seasonal fears aside, it’s probably not ghosts and goblins. It’s more likely to be raccoons or rodents which (in their own way) are just as scary to a homeowner. Probably scarier. After all, what self-respecting goblin chews through your electrical wires?

It’s That Time of Year

It may be time for pumpkins and trick-or-treating, but it’s also Fall, and animals are looking for a cozy place to spend the winter months, and perhaps raise a family in the spring. Your attic is looking like an ideal place for raccoons, bats, squirrels, rats and other critters looking to come in out of the cold. Unfortunately, they’ll do more than sleep in your attic. They’ll cause damage and leave droppings that smell and carry disease.

What Type of Critter is In My Attic?

Before you can solve the problem, you need to know who’s been sleeping in your attic. The sounds should give you a clue.

Daytime scurrying. If the creatures in your attic are scampering around during the day (but not at night), it’s probably squirrels. Night-time scampering can indicate raccoons and/ or rats.

Vocal noises. If you hear the animals making vocal noises such as growls, calls, or a sort of chattering, it’s very probably raccoons. Bats do make noise, but they’re extremely high-pitched and most people can’t hear them.

Scratching or pitter-patters at night. This probably indicates mice or rats, particularly if the sound continues inside the walls.

Thumping and bumping. While there are many things that go “bump” in the night in your attic around Halloween, it typically means that there’s a larger animal on the loose (mice and rats don’t “thump.”) You’ve probably got raccoons or opossums in residence.

Rustling noises during the day. You may have bats rusting in your attic or roof eaves.

Of course, a quick look-around for droppings can help you confirm what species is illegally squatting in your attic without paying rent.

Your next question should be: What do I do about it?
